An Unintentional Colonial Gift:
Kitchener and the Survey of Cyprus

On Thursday, 17 October 2019, the High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus in the United Kingdom, in collaboration with The National Archives, the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, and the Sylvia Ioannou Foundation, organised the lecture and exhibition “An Unintentional Colonial Gift: Kitchener and the Survey of Cyprus” at the National Archives lecture theatre in Richmond, London.
Caroline Ottaway-Searle, Director of Public Engagement at the National Archives welcomed the audience to the event, before passing the floor to the Cypriot High Commissioner, Mr Andreas S. Kakouris, who stressed the importance of such collaborations for a better understanding of the history of Cyprus. The High Commissioner then introduced the keynote speaker Ms Maria Iacovou, Professor of Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archaeology in the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Cyprus. Finally, Dr Marios Psaras, Cultural Counsellor at the Cyprus High Commission, took the floor to welcome the audience on behalf of the Director of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, Dr Ioanna Hadjicosti.
After the opening remarks, Professor Iacovou, an internationally respected scholar in the field of Cypriot Archaeology, presented a most engaging and enthusiastic illustrated lecture on the toponymic history of Cyprus, spanning from antiquity through to the modern times. Professor Iacovou presented a series of cartographies of the island of Cyprus through the ages, culminating in the ground-breaking work of Herbert Horatio Kitchener, who was the first to conduct a trigonometrical survey of the island in the late 19th century. The Professor highlighted the significance of geographic names as an integral part of Cyprus’s intangible cultural heritage, calling into attention the violation of this internationally recognised human right on the island after the 1974 Turkish invasion.
Professor Iacovou’s lecture was complemented with an exhibition that comprised some of the most important historical archives in relation to the cartographic history of Cyprus, including the original Kitchener map, documents, photographs, and other archival material. In addition to the display, Mr Dimitrios Stefanou from the Sylvia Ioannou Foundation and Dr Christoforos Vradis from Harokopio University provided a demonstration of a specifically designed online application on Kitchener’s Survey, which offers to the visitors the opportunity to interact with the maps.

«Ένα Ακούσιο Αποικιακό Δώρο:
Η Τοπογραφική Έρευνα της Κύπρου από τον Οράτιο Χέρμπερτ Κίτσενερ»

Την Πέμπτη 17 Οκτωβρίου 2019, η Ύπατη Αρμοστεία της Κύπρου στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο σε συνεργασία με τα βρετανικά Εθνικά Αρχεία, το Πολιτιστικό Ίδρυμα της Τράπεζας Κύπρου και το Ίδρυμα «Σύλβια Ιωάννου», διοργάνωσαν τη διάλεξη και έκθεση «Ένα Ακούσιο Αποικιακό Δώρο: Η Τοπογραφική Έρευνα της Κύπρου από τον Οράτιο Χέρμπερτ Κίτσενερ» στην αίθουσα διαλέξεων των Εθνικών Αρχείων στο Ρίτσμοντ του Λονδίνου.
Την εκδήλωση χαιρέτησαν η Διευθύντρια Δημοσίων Σχέσεων των Εθνικών Αρχείων, Caroline Ottaway-Searle, και ο Κύπριος Ύπατος Αρμοστής, Ανδρέας Σ. Κακουρής, ο οποίος ευχαρίστησε τους συνδιοργανωτές της εκδήλωσης, τονίζοντας τη σημασία τέτοιων πρωτοβουλιών για την καλύτερη κατανόηση της ιστορίας της Κύπρου. Ακολούθως, ο Ύπατος Αρμοστής σύστησε στο κοινό την κύρια ομιλήτρια της βραδιάς, κα Μαρία Ιακώβου, Καθηγήτρια Προϊστορικής και Πρωτοϊστορικής Αρχαιολογίας του Τμήματος Ιστορίας και Αρχαιολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου της Κύπρου. Τέλος, ο Δρ Μάριος Ψαράς, Μορφωτικός Σύμβουλος της Ύπατης Αρμοστείας, ανέγνωσε χαιρετισμό από τη Διευθύντρια του Πολιτιστικού Ιδρύματος της Τράπεζας Κύπρου, Δρ Ιωάννας Χατζηκωστή.
Μετά τους χαιρετισμούς, η διεθνώς διακεκριμένη ακαδημαϊκός στον χώρο της Κυπριακής Αρχαιολογίας, καθηγήτρια Μαρία Ιακώβου, παρουσίασε μια εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρουσα και ενθουσιώδη διάλεξη για την τοπωνυμική ιστορία της Κύπρου, από την αρχαιότητα μέχρι τον 20ο αιώνα. Η κ. Ιακώβου παρουσίασε μια σειρά από ιστορικές χαρτογραφήσεις της Κύπρου, με αποκορύφωμα την τριγωνομετρική έρευνα του Χέρμπερτ Οράτιου Κίτσενερ, που διεξήχθη περί τα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα. Η καθηγήτρια υπερθεμάτισε τη σημασία των τοπωνυμιών ως αναπόσπαστου μέρους της άυλης πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς του κυπριακού λαού, κρούοντας τον κώδωνα κινδύνου ενόψει της παραβίασης αυτού του διεθνώς αναγνωρισμένου ανθρώπινου δικαιώματος στην Κύπρο μετά την Τουρκική εισβολή του 1974.
Η διάλεξη συνοδεύτηκε από έκθεση, η οποία περιλάμβανε σημαντικά αρχεία για την χαρτογραφική ιστορία της Κύπρου: τους αυθεντικούς χάρτες του Κίτσενερ, έγγραφα, φωτογραφίες, αποικιακά αρχεία και άλλο αρχειακό υλικό. Κατά τη διάρκεια της έκθεσης, οι επισκέπτες είχαν, επίσης, την ευκαιρία να παρακολουθήσουν επίδειξη της ψηφιακής αξιοποίησης του χάρτη του Κίτσενερ από τους κ. Δημήτριο Στεφάνου από το Ίδρυμα «Σύλβια Ιωάννου» και Δρ. Χριστόφορο Βραδύ από το Χαροκόπειο Πανεπιστήμιο.
