Εγκαινιάστηκε η έκθεση «Γεώργιος Πολ. Γεωργίου: Κύπρος Παντοτινή», στο Λονδίνο

Πραγματοποιήθηκαν την Δευτέρα 16 Ιουνίου 2026, στο Ελληνικό Κέντρο του Λονδίνου, στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, τα εγκαίνια της έκθεσης «Γεώργιος Πολ. Γεωργίου: Κύπρος Παντοτινή» –μίας από τις εμβληματικές δράσεις του Πολιτιστικού Προγράμματος της Κυπριακής Προεδρίας του Συμβουλίου της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης 2026.

Τα εγκαίνια της έκθεσης, η οποία συνδιοργανώνεται από το Υφυπουργείο Πολιτισμού και τη Λεβέντειο Πινακοθήκη, τέλεσε η Υφυπουργός Πολιτισμού Δρ Βασιλική Κασσιανίδου, στην παρουσία του Ύπατου Αρμοστή της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο Δρος Κυριακού Κούρου, αρχηγών διπλωματικών αποστολών και εκπροσώπων του διπλωματικού σώματος στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, Βρετανοκυπρίων καλλιτεχνών, ακαδημαϊκών, εκπροσώπων πολιτιστικών οργανισμών, μελών του δημοσιογραφικού κόσμου, καθώς και εκπροσώπων της οικογένειας Λεβέντη και του Ιδρύματος Α. Γ. Λεβέντη.

Πρόκειται για την πρώτη διεθνή παρουσίαση της έκθεσης μετά την αρχική διοργάνωσή της στη Λευκωσία και για μια από τις σημαντικότερες παρουσιάσεις έργων του Γεώργιου Πολ. Γεωργίου που έχουν πραγματοποιηθεί ποτέ εκτός Κύπρου. Παρουσιάζει έργα των δεκαετιών του 1940 και του 1950, προερχόμενα από δημόσιες και ιδιωτικές συλλογές, μεταξύ των οποίων και έργα που επέστρεψαν πρόσφατα από την Αμμόχωστο μέσω της Δικοινοτικής Τεχνικής Επιτροπής για την Πολιτιστική Κληρονομιά.

Η παρουσίαση των συγκεκριμένων έργων προσδίδει στην έκθεση ιδιαίτερη ιστορική και συναισθηματική σημασία, καθώς για δεκαετίες παρέμεναν μη προσβάσιμα μετά τα γεγονότα του 1974.

Υπό την επιμέλεια της Διευθύντριας της Λεβέντειου Πινακοθήκης κας Λουκίας Λοΐζου Χατζηγαβριήλ και της κας Κατερίνας Στεφανίδου, η έκθεση προσφέρει στον επισκέπτη μια νέα ανάγνωση του οράματος του καλλιτέχνη και της συναισθηματικής του σχέσης με την Κύπρο, μέσα από επιμελημένες ξεναγήσεις και παράλληλες δράσεις που πραγματοποιούνται καθ’ όλη τη διάρκειά της.

Η παρουσίαση της έκθεσης στο Λονδίνο αποκτά ιδιαίτερη σημασία, καθώς απευθύνεται και στη μεγάλη κυπριακή και ελληνική διασπορά του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου, αναδεικνύοντας τον ρόλο της τέχνης ως γέφυρας μνήμης, πολιτιστικής ταυτότητας και συνέχειας για τις νεότερες γενιές.

Στον χαιρετισμό της, η Υφυπουργός Πολιτισμού αναφέρθηκε στην έκθεση αφιέρωμα στο έργο του Γεώργιου Πολυβίου Γεωργίου, ο οποίος, όπως επεσήμανε, «αποτελεί έναν από τους σημαντικότερους Κύπριους καλλιτέχνες της πρώτης γενιάς – μιας γενιάς που έθεσε τις βάσεις της σύγχρονης κυπριακής τέχνης και που έζησε τα πιο σημαντικά γεγονότα της σύγχρονης ιστορίας του νησιού. Γι’ αυτό και το έργο του Γεώργιου Πολ. Γεωργίου είναι συνδεδεμένο με την ιστορία, τη μνήμη και την ταυτότητα της Κύπρου και τη μετάβασή της από βρετανική αποικία σε ένα ανεξάρτητο κράτος».

Η Δρ Κασσιανίδου υπογράμμισε, μεταξύ άλλων, ότι ανακαλύπτοντας νέες πτυχές της πορείας του καλλιτέχνη, η έκθεση συμβάλλει σε μια βαθύτερη κατανόηση της ιστορίας της Κύπρου και του πολιτισμού της και ταυτόχρονα ενδυναμώνει το πολιτιστικό αποτύπωμα της Κυπριακής Προεδρίας, το οποίο επενδύει στον άνθρωπο, τη μνήμη, τη δημιουργία και τον πολιτισμό.

Παράλληλα με την έκθεση, υλοποιείται σε ολόκληρο το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο το εκπαιδευτικό θεατροπαιδαγωγικό πρόγραμμα «Timeless Cyprus», εμπνευσμένο από τη ζωή και το έργο του Γεώργιου Πολ. Γεωργίου. Μέχρι το τέλος Ιουνίου, περισσότερα από 25 σχολεία της ελληνικής και κυπριακής διασποράς σε Αγγλία, Σκωτία και Ουαλία θα έχουν συμμετάσχει στο πρόγραμμα, με περίπου 2.500 συμμετοχές παιδιών και νέων, οι οποίοι θα έχουν γνωρίσει την κυπριακή τέχνη, ιστορία και πολιτιστική μνήμη μέσα από δράσεις θεάτρου, αφήγησης και δημιουργικής συμμετοχής.

Η έκθεση εντάσσεται σε ένα ευρύτερο πολιτιστικό πρόγραμμα της Κυπριακής Προεδρίας του Συμβουλίου της ΕΕ 2026 στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, το οποίο περιλαμβάνει συναυλίες, κινηματογραφικές προβολές, λογοτεχνικές και εκπαιδευτικές δράσεις, προβάλλοντας τη σύγχρονη πολιτιστική ταυτότητα της Κύπρου μέσα από διαφορετικές μορφές τέχνης και δημιουργίας.

Η έκθεση θα παραμείνει ανοικτή μέχρι τις 22 Ιουνίου 2026.

“George Pol. Georghiou – Timeless Cyprus” exhibition inaugurated in London

The exhibition “George Pol. Georghiou – Timeless Cyprus” –one of the flagship events of the Cultural Programme of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026– was inaugurated yesterday, at the Hellenic Centre in London, on Monday 15 June 2026.

The exhibition, which is co-organized by the Deputy Ministry of Culture and the Leventis Gallery, was inaugurated by the Deputy Minister of Culture, Dr Vasiliki Kassianidou, in the presence of the High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus in the United Kingdom, Dr Kyriacos Kouros, heads of diplomatic missions and representatives of the diplomatic corps in the United Kingdom, British Cypriot artists, academics, representatives of cultural organizations, members of the press, as well as representatives of the Leventis family and the A. G. Leventis Foundation.

This is the first international presentation of the exhibition since its initial presentation in Lefkosia and it is one of the most important presentations of the works by George Pol. Georghiou ever exhibited abroad. It presents works of the 1940s and 1950s, from public and private collections, including works recently returned from Ammochostos through the Bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage.

The presentation of these works adds particular historical and emotional value to the exhibition, as for decades they remained inaccessible after the events of 1974.

Curated by the Director of the Leventis Gallery, Ms Loukia Loizou Hadjigavriel, and Ms Katerina Stephanides, the exhibition offers visitors a new reading of the artist’s vision and his emotional relationship with Cyprus, through guided tours and parallel activities that take place throughout its duration. The presentation of the exhibition in London is of particular importance, as it is addressed to the great Greek Cypriot and Greek diaspora of the United Kingdom, highlighting the role of art as a bridge of memory, cultural identity and continuity for the younger generations.

In her address, the Deputy Minister of Culture referred to the exhibition –a tribute to the work of George Pol. Georgηiou, who, as she pointed out, “is one of the most important Cypriot artists of the first generation– a generation that laid the foundations of contemporary Cypriot art and experienced the most important events in the island’s modern history. His work is thus linked to the history, memory and identity of Cyprus and its transition from a British colony to an independent state”.

Dr Kassianidou underlined, among other things, that by discovering new aspects of the artist’s career, the exhibition contributes to a deeper understanding of the history of Cyprus and its culture and at the same time, strengthens the cultural footprint of the Cyprus Presidency, which invests in people, memory, creation and culture.

Alongside the exhibition, the educational theatrical program “Timeless Cyprus”, inspired by the life and work of George Pol. Georghiou, is held throughout the United Kingdom. By the end of June, more than 25 schools of Greece and Cyprus diaspora in England, Scotland and Wales will have participated in the programme, with approximately 2,500 participations of children and young people, who will have become familiar with Cypriot art, history and cultural memory through theatre, storytelling and various forms of creative participation.

The exhibition is part of a wider cultural programme of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU 2026 in the United Kingdom, which includes concerts, film screenings, literary and educational activities, highlighting the contemporary cultural identity of Cyprus through different forms of art and creation.

The exhibition will remain open to the public until 22 June 2026.
