Συνάντηση του Προέδρου της Δημοκρατίας με τον Πρωθυπουργό του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου, στη Νέα Υόρκη

Ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας κ. Νίκος Χριστοδουλίδης είχε την Τρίτη, 22 Σεπτεμβρίου 2026, συνάντηση με τον Πρωθυπουργό του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου κ. Andy Burnham, στο περιθώριο της 81ης Γενικής Συνέλευσης του Οργανισμού Ηνωμένων Εθνών (ΟΗΕ), την πρώτη κατ’ ιδίαν συνάντηση των δύο ηγετών μετά την ανάληψη των καθηκόντων του Βρετανού Πρωθυπουργού.
Κατά τη συνάντηση, ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας εξέφρασε την ικανοποίησή του για το ουσιαστικό στρατηγικό περιεχόμενο που έχουν αποκτήσει οι σχέσεις Κύπρου και Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου και επανέλαβε τη βούληση της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας για περαιτέρω αναβάθμισή τους.
Οι δύο χώρες διατηρούν μια ευρεία και πολυδιάστατη σχέση, η οποία εκτείνεται από την εξωτερική πολιτική, την ασφάλεια και την άμυνα μέχρι την οικονομία, τις επενδύσεις, τον τουρισμό, την εκπαίδευση και τους ιδιαίτερα ισχυρούς δεσμούς μεταξύ των δύο λαών.
Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, ο Πρόεδρος Χριστοδουλίδης χαιρέτισε την πρόθεση όπως ο τέταρτος γύρος του Στρατηγικού Διαλόγου Κύπρου και Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου πραγματοποιηθεί σε υπουργικό επίπεδο τον Δεκέμβριο, επισημαίνοντας ότι μπορεί να αποτελέσει ένα ακόμη ουσιαστικό βήμα για την περαιτέρω εμβάθυνση και θεσμική ενίσχυση της συνεργασίας των δύο χωρών.
Οι δύο ηγέτες συζήτησαν επίσης ζητήματα που αφορούν τις Βρετανικές Βάσεις στην Κύπρο. Ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας επανέλαβε ότι η Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία δεν εμπλέκεται σε οποιαδήποτε επιχείρηση στρατιωτικού χαρακτήρα και υπογράμμισε ότι η ασφάλεια της Κύπρου και του πληθυσμού στο νησί, καθώς και οι σχέσεις με τα κράτη της περιοχής πρέπει να λαμβάνονται σοβαρά υπόψη κατά τη λήψη οποιωνδήποτε αποφάσεων σε σχέση με τις Βρετανικές Βάσεις.
Συζητήθηκε επίσης η προσπάθεια για πλήρη ένταξη της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας στη Ζώνη Σένγκεν. Ο Πρόεδρος Χριστοδουλίδης αναφέρθηκε στη σημαντική πρόοδο που έχει επιτευχθεί και στη θετική έκθεση της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής, σημειώνοντας ότι η Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία εργάζεται με τα κράτη μέλη και την Επιτροπή για τη λήψη της πολιτικής απόφασης το ταχύτερο δυνατόν.
Ιδιαίτερη έμφαση δόθηκε στο Κυπριακό. Ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας ενημέρωσε τον Βρετανό Πρωθυπουργό για τις τελευταίες εξελίξεις και τις προσπάθειες που καταβάλλονται για τη δημιουργία των προϋποθέσεων επανέναρξης ουσιαστικών διαπραγματεύσεων, από το σημείο στο οποίο διακόπηκαν, στη βάση του συμφωνημένου πλαισίου και των σχετικών ψηφισμάτων του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας των Ηνωμένων Εθνών.
Ο Πρόεδρος Χριστοδουλίδης υπογράμμισε τον ιδιαίτερα σημαντικό ρόλο που μπορεί να διαδραματίσει το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, τόσο ως μόνιμο μέλος του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας όσο και ως εγγυήτρια δύναμη, και ζήτησε την προσωπική συμβολή του κ. Burnham προς υποστήριξη των προσπαθειών του Γενικού Γραμματέα των Ηνωμένων Εθνών (ΗΕ) για επανέναρξη της διαπραγματευτικής διαδικασίας.
Συζητήθηκαν επίσης οι σχέσεις Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης (ΕΕ) και Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου. Ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας αναφέρθηκε στην ιδιαίτερη προτεραιότητα που έδωσε η Κυπριακή Προεδρία του Συμβουλίου της ΕΕ στην περαιτέρω ενίσχυση αυτής της στρατηγικής σχέσης και στα ουσιαστικά αποτελέσματα που επιτεύχθηκαν κατά τη διάρκειά της.
Τέλος, οι δύο ηγέτες αντάλλαξαν απόψεις για τις εξελίξεις στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο και την ευρύτερη Μέση Ανατολή. Ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας υπογράμμισε τη σημασία στενότερου στρατηγικού συντονισμού Κύπρου και Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου για την περιφερειακή ασφάλεια και σταθερότητα, στη βάση και της εμπειρίας της μεταξύ τους συνεργασίας σε ανθρωπιστικές επιχειρήσεις.

Meeting of the President of the Republic of Cyprus and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in New York

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, had a meeting today, 22 September 2026, with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Mr Andy Burnham, within the framework of the 81st General Assembly of the United Nations (UN). This is the first one-on-one meeting between the two leaders since the British Prime Minister took office.
During the meeting, the President of the Republic of Cyprus expressed his satisfaction on the significant strategic substance that the Cyprus–UK relations have acquired and reaffirmed the willingness of the Republic of Cyprus to strengthen them further.
The two countries maintain a broad and multifaceted relationship which extends from foreign policy to security and defence and also to the economy, investment, tourism, education as well as the particularly strong bonds between the two peoples.
In this context, President Christodoulides welcomed the intention of holding the fourth round of the Cyprus and UK Strategic Dialogue on a ministerial level in December, indicating that this could be one more substantial step for the further enhancement and institutional strengthening of the cooperation between the two countries.
Furthermore, the two leaders discussed matters concerning the British Bases in Cyprus. The President of the Republic reiterated that the Republic of Cyprus is not involved in any military operation and stressed that the security of Cyprus and its people, as well as its relations with the neighbouring countries ought to be seriously considered when making any decisions regarding the British Bases.
The efforts to fully integrate the Republic of Cyprus in the Schengen Area were also discussed. President Christodoulides referred to the remarkable progress that has been achieved and to the positive report by the European Commission, pointing out that the Republic of Cyprus is working alongside the member states and the European Commission towards reaching the political decision the soonest possible.
A particular focus was placed on the Cyprus issue. The President of the Republic updated the British Prime Minister on the latest developments and on the current efforts being made to pave the way for the resumption of substantive negotiations, from the point where they were previously interrupted, adhering to the agreed framework and to the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions.
President Christodoulides emphasised the particularly vital role that the UK may have, both as a permanent member of the Security Council but also as a guarantor power, and asked for Mr Burnham’s personal contribution towards the efforts being made by the UN Secretary–General for the resumption of the negotiation process.
Furthermore, relations between the European Union (EU) and the UK were also discussed. The President of the Republic emphasised how the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU had prioritised the further enhancement of this strategic relationship noting the substantial results yielded during its term.
Concluding the meeting, the two leaders exchanged views on the developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and the broader Middle East. The President of the Republic of Cyprus underlined the importance of a closer strategic alignment between Cyprus and the UK with a view to preserving regional security and stability, building upon their shared experience from cooperating in humanitarian operations.
